How to Keep Horses Happy: Going Beyond the Basics

When it comes to boarding your beloved equine companion, finding a facility that meets their physical needs is just the beginning. As horse owners, riders, and lifelong admirers, we understand that your horse’s happiness matters just as much as their safety and health. That’s why at White Fences Equestrian Center, we believe in going beyond the basics of boarding to ensure every horse’s mental and emotional well-being is prioritized alongside their physical care.

In this post, we’ll share the three pillars we’ve found most important in over a decade of managing and running a successful equestrian facility: enrichment, consistent routines, and mental well-being. While every horse is unique and horses in different climates or workloads may have different needs these are the practices that have worked for us and our boarders.

Enrichment Activities

Just like humans, horses thrive when they are mentally stimulated. Enrichment helps prevent boredom, supports positive behaviors, and promotes overall happiness. At our boarding facility, all boarded horses are required to be in a training program. This means they’re usually ridden between 2 and 4 times a week, either by their trainer or their owner. In this context, we’re talking about enrichment beyond their regular rides the extra touches that make life more engaging and fulfilling for them.

At our facility, we integrate enrichment thoughtfully, offering turnout options, stimulating riding areas, and access to toys and puzzles when appropriate. One barn favorite is below, which we have found keeps horses engaged, especially during stall rest or downtime. Knowing your horse’s personality is key: Some love interactive toys, while others are content to watch the world go by.

Examples of non-riding enrichment include:

  • Providing equine-safe toys.  We have found that this particular toy is a hit across all our equine friends.  Amazing Graze Horse Toy & Treat Dispenser, we have also found it to be able to last. No, we do not have an affiliation with this toy nor are we in an affiliate program with the manufacturer, this toy actually works and keeps the horses entertained. Our clients usually fill these with alfafa cubes.
  • Groundwork exercises to strengthen your bond

  • Turnout with pasture buddies. No hind shoes allowed!

  • Turnout in safe private paddocks at least for a few hours a day.  We recognize that some facilities have a limited space. Some horse owners don’t want their horses to get hurt so they limit turn out.  We try to work with and within their requirements/needs.
  • Riding in varied environments. We offer groomed trails that allows for horses to get out and walk on different terrains.  If you don’t feel comfortable riding your horse, you can hand walk your horse through the trails.

Consistent Routines

Horses are creatures of habit. They feel most secure when life follows a predictable pattern.  At White Fences, our schedule includes consistent feeding times (rain or shine), turnout, exercise, and grooming. This reliability reduces stress and helps horses settle into their environment.

We also work with owners to tailor routines to each horse’s needs whether they’re in full or part time work. Horses do seem to have a built-in clock, so sticking to the plan is key to keeping everyone happy. Check our our boarding options.

Mental Well-Being

A happy horse is a healthy horse and mental health plays a huge role in overall wellness. Stress and anxiety can negatively affect appetite, digestion, and even soundness. Our barn design supports mental well-being with:

  • Ample turnout and safe socialization opportunities

  • Open stall layouts for visibility and airflow

  • Attention to horse-to-horse compatibility (we monitor interactions and adjust neighbors as needed)

We also make it a priority to match turnout or stall neighbors carefully because not all horses get along. When we see increased ear pinning, kicking, or biting (even through the fence), we take action to find a more harmonious arrangement.

Final Thoughts

When evaluating a boarding facility, look past the obvious amenities. Consider how they support enrichment, routine, and mental well-being, these are what truly keep horses happy.

At White Fences Equestrian Center, your horse’s happiness is our top priority. We invite you to:

Your horse deserves more than a place to stay they deserve a place to thrive.
