Dressage, Hunter/Jumper Instructor

Mari has been surrounded by horses since she was born in San Jose, Costa Rica. When the cattle working quarter horses at her family’s farm weren’t enough, at age 10, she found and fell in love with dressage at a local Costa Rican equestrian center. While the industry in the region is still developing, Mari took every chance she got to train with top clinicians. After her grandfather purchased her first schoolmaster she went all the way to showing in the Junior, Young Rider and FEI levels. She participated in the qualifying tryouts against senior professionals for the Central American and the Caribbean games, ending up as the Costa Rican team’s reserve at age 17. After high school Mari wanted to be even more involved in the horse industry, and she moved to Wellington Florida. There she obtained her BA while being a working student for top FEI riders like: Caroline Roffman and Jennifer Benoit. With them, she found a passion for working with young horses, teaching / Instructing and sales.

After Wellington, Mari moved back to Costa Rica and started a career working at her parents’ business, but always kept training her horses and sales prospects at her barn. As life would have it, Mari had an opportunity to move to Austin due to her husband’s job. She began to search for a barn that shared her views on training, care and teaching. Mari found White Fences Equestrian Center, where she loves to teach beginners to intermediate riders of all ages. Her goal is not only to teach to ride confidently but also to know all about top notch horse handling, care and management. She is also training and showing her newly imported FEI gelding, Lotus under Jennifer’s Foss watchful eye!
